The 186 steps of Todesstiege at Mauthausen

The infamous Stairs of Death (Todesstiege) at Mauthausen, the 186 stone steps that prisoners had to climb carrying granite blocks weighing over 50 kg. Many died from exhaustion or were pushed down by the SS. Today vegetation surrounds this stairway that remains one of the most powerful symbols of the camp brutality.
