The majestic Lion Mound (Butte du Lion) rises on the battlefield of Waterloo, where on June 18, 1815, Napoleon was definitively defeated by the allied forces led by the Duke of Wellington and Prussian Marshal Blucher. The 41-meter-high artificial hill, built between 1820 and 1826, is topped by a 28-ton cast iron lion. The 226 steps of the monumental staircase lead to the top, offering a panoramic view of the battlefield.
