The photograph portrays Hradcany Square seen from inside the castle first courtyard, looking towards the city. At the center rises the statue of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk, first president of Czechoslovakia from 1918 to 1935 and founding father of the nation. The monument, work of sculptor Ladislav Saloun, was erected in 2000 as testimony to the return to democracy after the Velvet Revolution. On the left, the Archbishop Palace with its pink Rococo facade can be glimpsed. On the right, Salm Palace with its neoclassical architecture. In the foreground, the elegant five-arm green cast iron lamppost decorates the wide paved square. Tourists stroll enjoying the panoramic view of the city opening beyond the castle gates.
