The abbey cloister represents one of the masterpieces of medieval monastic architecture. Built in the 13th century, it features a double colonnade of slender limestone columns arranged in quincunx pattern supporting slightly ogival arches. In the center, the geometric garden with boxwood beds and roses perpetuates the tradition of medieval monastic gardens. The sunlight creates an evocative contrast between the illuminated areas and the shadows of the portico. In the background, the mass of the abbey church with its characteristic Gothic rose window can be glimpsed. The cloister, suspended between sky and sea, offered the monks a space for meditation and prayer away from the world.
