The grave of Amedeo Modigliani, Italian painter and sculptor born in Livorno in 1884 and died in Paris in 1920. The tombstone also bears the name of his partner Jeanne Hebuterne, who committed suicide the day after the artist's death by throwing herself from a window while pregnant with their second child, and the poignant dedication "Devoted companion to the ultimate sacrifice." Modigliani, known for his portraits with elongated necks and almond-shaped eyes, lived a bohemian life marked by poverty, alcohol, and tuberculosis. The fresh flowers on the grave testify to the affection that still surrounds his memory.
