One of the most moving sculptures at Pere-Lachaise: the funerary monument of Josephine Verrazzi, who died in 1879. The white marble sculpture depicts the woman lying on her deathbed, with a serene face and relaxed hands, while a small child, her son, leans over her in a gesture of infinite tenderness, as if to wake her or give her a last kiss. The inscription on the base reads "She was an exemplary wife and mother," while the names of other family members buried in the same tomb complete the epitaph. The work captures with extraordinary delicacy the moment of separation between mother and child.
