The funerary monument of Louis Tullius Joachim Visconti, Franco-Italian architect who designed Napoleon's tomb at Les Invalides and the new Louvre. The sculpture depicts him semi-reclining in a thoughtful pose, with one hand supporting his head and the other resting on architectural documents. The relief behind him shows a winged sphinx, symbol of the enigma of art and death. Visconti, born in Rome in 1791 and died in Paris in 1853, was one of the most important architects of the Louis Philippe and Napoleon III period, helping to define the monumental face of modern Paris.
