The interior of Buchenwald crematorium shows the main hall with lined-up cremation ovens. The red brick structure houses six ovens with their arched openings, designed by the Topf und Sohne company of Erfurt, the same firm that supplied the Auschwitz ovens. In the foreground, the metal cart on rails was used to transport bodies to the ovens. The industrial lamps and lit windows create an atmosphere that cruelly contrasts with the horror of what happened in this place. The crematorium could burn up to 400 bodies per day at peak operation.
