The memorial built on the site where prisoner barracks once stood at Buchenwald. Stone pillars arranged in a circle mark the foundations of one of the demolished barracks, while the gravel-covered ground indicates the extent of the area where inmates were crammed. In the background, one of the original camp buildings is still visible. After liberation, the wooden barracks were demolished for hygienic reasons, but their perimeter has been preserved as a place of memory. Buchenwald held over 250,000 prisoners from more than 50 nations.
