The great staircase that connected the first terrace of the Kos Asclepion to the upper terraces, where the temple and most sacred buildings of the complex were located. The dark stone steps lead the eye toward the temple columns visible at the top, while cypresses and a large tree on the sides create a natural frame. This staircase was the path that pilgrims and the sick had to take to reach the heart of the sanctuary, a physical and symbolic journey toward healing. The scenic architecture of the Asclepion was designed to impress visitors and spiritually prepare them for treatment.
