The famous White Tower of Thessaloniki, landmark symbol of the city and Greek Macedonia. Built by the Ottomans in the 15th century as fortification and prison, the tower owes its current name to the whitewash painted in 1890 to erase its sinister reputation as Tower of Blood. In the foreground, the statue of Philip II of Macedonia and the white marble plaza welcome visitors strolling along the waterfront. Standing 34 meters tall with six floors, the tower today houses a museum on Thessaloniki history and offers panoramic views from its rooftop terrace.
