Church of St. Angelo and Our Lady of Libera, Acquaviva delle Fonti

The church of Sant'Angelo is believed to represent the oldest religious building in Acquaviva delle Fonti. The church served as a sacred resting place for prematurely departed infants and children, a place where they were entrusted to the custody of the Angel and the Virgin, thus remaining immersed in community prayers. This custom was interrupted by the Napoleonic reforms of 1806, which introduced a ban on burials within the church walls, mandating the establishment of cemeteries outside the urban fabric.
