The Arch of Shadows of Camamassima: Between Legend and History

The Arco delle Ombre, located in the heart of the village of Camamassima in Puglia, is surrounded by ancient legends linked to the presence of ghosts that, it is said, passed continuously below. This narrative has origins in the era in which there was no public lighting and the citizens, to move in the evening, were forced to use oil lanterns. Looking at the arch from a distance, the shadows projected on the walls from the lanterns created spectral effects, giving the impression of seeing phantasmagorical apparitions.
