Panoramic view of Rione Casalnuovo, one of the historic quarters of the Sassi of Matera, photographed from the opposite end of the Gravina. The cave-houses overlap in a millennial architectural interweaving, where the roofs of the lower dwellings serve as terraces for those above. This district, together with Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, forms the historic core declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
