The composition documents the western view of the archaeological remains of the Roman Macellum of Pozzuoli, erroneously known as the Temple of Serapis. The image was captured at sunset, with the sun setting on the horizon and creating central light rays above the ruins. In the center of the site stand the three residual columns of the colonnade, diagnostic elements of the bradyseism phenomenon.
