The majestic Quirinal Palace, current official residence of the President of the Italian Republic. Located on the hill of the same name, the highest in Rome, this palace was built from 1583 as a summer residence for the popes. It later became the home of the kings of Italy and since 1946 has housed the Italian Head of State. Its austere facade dominates Piazza del Quirinale.
