Vianden Castle rises imposingly on the hill overlooking the town of the same name and the Our river valley. This photograph shows the entire fortified complex with its cylindrical towers, bastions and residential palace developing on multiple levels. Built between the 11th and 14th centuries on the remains of a Roman castellum, it is considered one of the largest and most beautiful feudal castles of the Romanesque and Gothic era in Western Europe. The black and white photograph enhances the monumentality of the structure, while the winter landscape with wooded hills in the background adds depth to the scene. The bare vegetation reveals the complex defensive architecture of the castle.
