The bust of Victor Hugo watches over the town of Vianden from its position on the bridge crossing the Our river. The black and white night photograph captures the monument illuminated by the light of an old-style three-armed lamppost. The great French writer stayed in Vianden on three occasions during his exile from 1862 to 1871, becoming fascinated by the castle and landscape which he immortalized in numerous drawings. The composition with pedestrian crossings in the foreground and the monument emerging from darkness creates an evocative atmosphere evoking the 19th century romanticism dear to the writer. Vianden still preserves the house where Hugo stayed, now a museum dedicated to him.
