Republic Street, one of Valletta's main arteries, descends steeply towards the sea revealing the hilly topography of the Maltese capital. Buildings on both sides of the street feature the characteristic gallariji, enclosed wooden balconies in various colors that have become a symbol of Maltese architecture. The limestone facades, worn by time and sea salt, show tones ranging from golden to grey. Parked cars and electric cables testify to daily life in this museum city. At the end of the street, the silhouette of a church can be glimpsed. This perspective is typical of Valletta streets, built on a regular grid by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century.
