The photograph documents the ruins of the Lagebaracke, the conference hut where on July 20, 1944 Claus von Stauffenberg attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Only the concrete foundations and some scattered blocks remain of the original reinforced wooden structure. The building was completely destroyed during the 1945 demolitions. A large tree now grows in the center of the ruins, a symbol of nature reclaiming the site. Stauffenberg's bomb explosion killed four people but Hitler survived, protected by the heavy oak table in the room.
