The entrance gate of Auschwitz I with the inscription Arbeit Macht Frei (Work sets you free). This cynical inscription greeted prisoners upon arrival at the camp. The letter B in the word ARBEIT is upside down, traditionally believed to have been intentionally made by the prisoners who forged the gate as an act of silent resistance.
