Entrance to Block 17 in Auschwitz I camp. The red brick blocks were originally Polish army barracks, later converted into prisoner barracks. Each block could hold hundreds of inmates in inhumane overcrowded conditions. Today many blocks house the permanent exhibitions of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum.
