View of the roll call square (Appellplatz) in Auschwitz I concentration camp. This open space between the red brick blocks was where prisoners were counted twice daily, forced to stand for hours regardless of weather conditions. In the background are the buildings that housed the detention blocks, now part of the memorial museum.
