View of Auschwitz I camp with watchtower and barbed wire fence. The watchtowers were strategically positioned along the entire perimeter of the camp to allow the SS to monitor prisoners and prevent escape attempts. Soldiers were authorized to shoot on sight anyone approaching the fence.
