The monumental Treblinka memorial photographed at sunset, with the moon rising in the background. The central granite structure, 8 meters high, was erected on the exact spot where the gas chambers stood. Around it extends a field of 17,000 rough stones of various sizes, each symbolically representing a destroyed Jewish community. Treblinka was the second extermination camp by number of victims after Auschwitz: between July 1942 and October 1943, approximately 900,000 people were murdered there, almost all Jewish, mainly from the Warsaw ghetto.
