Imposing view of Zindan Gate with its characteristic twin circular towers, one of the best-preserved entrances of Kalemegdan Fortress. This medieval defensive structure, whose name derives from Turkish zindan meaning prison, was built in the 15th century during Ottoman rule. The mighty limestone walls and wooden drawbridge testify to the strategic importance of this bastion protecting access to the upper fortress. Zindan Gate is today one of Belgrade most photographed monuments.
