The photograph portrays the main square of Guernica, dominated by the Peace Museum (Museo de la Paz) located in the arcaded building on the left. In the center of the square, a modern red terracotta sculpture and the statue of a historical figure. On the buildings surrounding the square, colorful murals celebrating Basque culture and peace stand out. Two children play on the ancient cobblestones of the square. The Peace Museum, inaugurated in 1998, documents the 1937 bombing and promotes a culture of reconciliation. Guernica was the first city in history to suffer an aerial bombing on civilians, an event that inspired Picasso's famous painting.
