Sergels Torg, Stockholm's most central and modern square, presents itself with its characteristic black and white triangular pavement. On the left rises the glass Kulturhuset tower, the city's cultural center designed in the 1960s, while on the right is the building housing shops and restaurants. In the center of the square, the 37-meter-high glass column by sculptor Edvin Ohrstrom can be glimpsed. Passersby cross this space representing the commercial and social heart of contemporary Stockholm. The square, built in the 1960s-70s as part of the city center redevelopment, is an example of Scandinavian modernist architecture.
