Imposing statue of Martin Luther King Jr. emerging from the Stone of Hope in the memorial dedicated to him on Washington National Mall. The work by Chinese sculptor Lei Yixin, 9 meters tall, depicts the civil rights leader with crossed arms and determined gaze toward the horizon. The inscription I Was a Drum Major for Justice, Peace and Righteousness summarizes the mission of a life dedicated to nonviolent struggle for equality. Inaugurated in 2011, it is the first memorial on the Mall dedicated to an African American.
