It is estimated that more than a million people were killed in Auschwitz. Almost a million of these were Jews. The exact number is difficult to define. A lot of prisoners were not registered and nazis destroyed a lot of their papers. Accoriding to the studies of the polish historian Franciszek Piper, nazis registerd only 205000 deaths in the camp while more than 800000 were not registered.
