General Anthony Mc Auliffe commanded the 101st Airborne during the siege of Bastogne. he is famous for the answer he gave to the German forces when they ordered the surrender of the besieged Americans. McAuliffe, despite the difficult situation of American troops, replied with a lapidary "Nuts!" displacing the Germans.
