The first Hospital of History

Island of Kos, Asclepeion

The Temple was the first hospital in history. Here, not far from the city, Hippocrates created this place where recoveries were stimulated not only by medications prepared with the active ingredients from plant or animal, but even with physical activities, through dance, theater, manipulation, especially by working the clay. It was a place of regeneration and wellness care. Even the song was considered having healing power. Asclepius was the son of Apollo, master of Chiron, who taught him the technique of medicine and soon the same Asclepius is placed at the disposal of the patients creating these healing centres. Hippocrates was the one who turned this "shamanic" art of healing practice, used by Asclepius, in a scientifically studied process, what is now the famous "Hippocratic Oath" that begins with the invocation: "To Apollo, Asclepius, Hygieia, and Panacea ... "what the doctors still promise respect to the foundations of ethics of their profession.
