Traditional fishing structure at San Lorenzo Bay in Vieste
The San Lorenzo Bay trabucco is a coastal fishing structure located on the shoreline north of the town of Vieste. The construction is based on a wooden platform anchored to the limestone rock of the Gargano coast and extends toward the sea through long arms known as antennas, which support a fine-meshed net called a "trabocchetto." This fishing system, historically widespread along the Adriatic stretch between Puglia and Abruzzo, allows for the interception of migratory fish flows without the need for seafaring. The structure is entirely built from Aleppo pine and maritime pine wood, materials selected for their resistance to salt spray and wind force. The coastal context features low outcropping cliffs and constant wave motion, elements functional to the effectiveness of this traditional fish extraction technique.
