Frontal view of the Mardasson Memorial in Bastogne, an imposing five-pointed star-shaped monument erected in memory of American soldiers who fell during the Battle of the Bulge. Inaugurated in 1950, the memorial bears the names of the 48 American states of that era engraved along the upper edge, including Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and South Dakota. The brick columns and gray stone walls emerge from the snow cover blanketing the surrounding lawn, while the bare trees of the Belgian Ardennes frame the structure. The monument commemorates the approximately 76,000 American soldiers killed, wounded, or missing during the German offensive of December 1944.
