The spectacular sgraffito decorations of Cesky Krumlov castle fourth courtyard
The photograph shows one of the inner courtyards of Cesky Krumlov castle, famous for its extraordinary sgraffito decorations. The walls of surrounding buildings are entirely covered with paintings imitating three-dimensional rustication in ochre and gray tones, creating a striking optical effect. Between the fake stones open niches with frescoes depicting mythological scenes and allegorical figures. The cobblestone floor arranged in herringbone pattern leads to an arched passage through the building. Wooden benches and pots with ornamental shrubs furnish the space. The courtyard, dating from the 16th century, represents one of the best-preserved examples of Renaissance decoration in Bohemia. This technique, imported from Italy, was widely used in castles and noble residences of Central Europe.
