The infamous gate with the inscription Arbeit Macht Frei (Work Sets You Free) at the entrance to Theresienstadt Block A. This cynical inscription, also present at Auschwitz and other camps, represented the lie with which the Nazis masked the true nature of concentration camps. The wrought iron gate opens onto an inner courtyard surrounded by Block A buildings. Thousands of prisoners passed through this gateway, many of whom never returned.
