A masonry archway marks one of the internal passages of Theresienstadt concentration camp. This Habsburg fortress architecture was repurposed by the Nazis to divide different sectors of the camp. The arches and passages created a labyrinth of courtyards and cell blocks that disoriented prisoners and facilitated guard control. Each passage could be closed and monitored, making any escape attempt impossible.
