The entrance to Theresienstadt Small Fortress with its characteristic black and white striped portal. The stone-paved square led prisoners through this gateway to the cells and inner courtyards. The austere architecture of the Habsburg fortress was exploited by the Nazis to create an environment of psychological terror. Above the arch, chimneys and fortress structures stand against the threatening sky, while grassy bastions surround the entire complex.
