The Theresienstadt National Cemetery extends before the fortress walls with orderly rows of headstones commemorating the victims. A large wooden cross dominates the center of the cemetery, symbolizing all Christians who died in the camp. The graves, arranged in precise rows on the green lawn, represent only a portion of the over 35,000 people who died at Terezin from starvation, disease, and executions. In the background rise the bastions of the 18th-century fortress transformed by the Nazis into a place of imprisonment and death.
