A cobblestone path winds among the crypts and mausoleums of Pere-Lachaise on a winter day. The bare trees let the gray light of the Parisian sky filter through, creating a melancholic and contemplative atmosphere. The funerary chapels follow one another along the path, each with its own architectural style and history. Pere-Lachaise, with its 44 hectares and over 70,000 tombs, is organized like a true city of the dead, with streets, avenues, and squares bearing the names of illustrious figures or of trees and flowers.
