The photograph portrays one of the evocative alleys of the Petite France district, the historic and most picturesque heart of Strasbourg. The Alsatian half-timbered houses, with typical white facades and dark wooden beams, overlook the narrow stone-paved street. Flower-filled balconies, wrought iron signs and artisan shops characterize this corner of the city that seems frozen in time. The district, once inhabited by tanners, millers and fishermen, owes its name to the ancient hospital that treated syphilis patients, called at the time the French disease. Today it is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Alsace.
