The night shot portrays the Barrage Vauban, an imposing work of military engineering designed by architect Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban in the 17th century. The thirteen arches of the dam, illuminated with blue lights, are reflected in the dark waters of the Ill River creating a spectacular effect. The structure, 120 meters long, had the function of regulating water levels to flood the surrounding countryside in case of enemy siege. Today the Barrage Vauban houses a panoramic terrace on the roof offering a unique view of the Ponts Couverts and historic center. The dam represents an extraordinary example of defensive architecture from the French Grand Siecle.
