A black and white image that enhances the drama of the Quadriga, the bronze sculpture that crowns the Brandenburg Gate. Created by Johann Gottfried Schadow in 1793, it depicts the goddess of Victory on a chariot drawn by four horses. The statue has a troubled history: it was taken to Paris by Napoleon in 1806 and returned in 1814, then damaged during World War II and restored. The Prussian eagle and Iron Cross were added after the Napoleonic wars. The bas-relief below shows mythological scenes.
