The crematorium building of Dachau concentration camp, known as "Barrack X," seen from outside. The brick structure with dark roof and chimney towering on the left was built in 1942-43 to replace the old crematorium that had become insufficient. The building contains several rooms: the undressing room, the gas chamber disguised as a "shower," the cremation oven room, and the mortuary. Surrounded by vegetation that now softens its sinister appearance, Dachau's crematorium represents one of the most complete testimonies of the Nazi death machine.
