Three wooden poles with metal hooks stand in the barracks area of Sachsenhausen. These torture instruments were used for Pfahlhangen, suspension by arms tied behind the back, one of the cruelest punishments inflicted on prisoners. The victim would be lifted off the ground and left hanging for hours, causing shoulder dislocation and excruciating pain. In the background, the foundations of demolished barracks and the camp perimeter wall are visible. These poles have been preserved as testimony to the systematic torture practiced in the camp.
