The iron gate at the inner entrance of Buchenwald camp, with the cynical inscription "Jedem Das Seine" (To each his own). Unlike Auschwitz where "Arbeit Macht Frei" was written, at Buchenwald the Nazis chose this maxim of Roman origin to justify the atrocities committed: according to their perverse ideology, prisoners "deserved" their fate. The inscription, designed by the Bauhaus and readable from inside the camp, forced prisoners to see it every day during roll call. The flowers placed nearby testify to visitors' respect for the over 56,000 victims who lost their lives at Buchenwald.
