The famous Caryatids of the Erechtheion, six magnificent female sculptures serving as columns in the southern porch of the temple on the Athens Acropolis. These elegant figures, carved in Pentelic marble around 420 BC, represent young Athenian women gracefully supporting the portico architrave. An absolute masterpiece of classical Greek art, the Caryatids embody the ideal of beauty and proportion from the age of Pericles. The statues visible today are replicas, while five originals are housed in the Acropolis Museum and one at the British Museum.
