The imposing monumental entrance to the Athens Acropolis, the Propylaea, with their majestic Doric columns welcoming visitors for over 2400 years. Built between 437 and 432 BC to designs by architect Mnesicles, the Propylaea represented the passage from the profane world to the sacred realm of the Acropolis. The Pentelic marble columns, steps worn by millions of footsteps, and scattered stone blocks testify to the greatness and history of this monument. Tourists climbing the steps retrace the same path as ancient Athenians heading to the sacred temples.
