Athinios port in Santorini nestled among the spectacular rock walls of the caldera
The photograph shows Athinios port, Santorini's main maritime terminal for ferries and cruise ships. The pier extends at the foot of imposing rock walls that rise vertically, showing the geological stratifications created by successive volcanic eruptions: layers of light pumice alternate with bands of dark lava. On the left, modern buildings have been carved directly into the rock, housing restaurants and commercial activities. A classic-style lamppost in the foreground adds a picturesque touch to the scene. Boats and tenders are moored along the pier painted with yellow stripes. In the distance, beyond the deep blue of the sea, Thirassia island can be glimpsed. This port is the arrival point for thousands of tourists who reach Santorini daily by sea.
