Walking on the lunar landscape of Nea Kameni volcano at the center of Santorini caldera
The image documents an excursion on the volcanic island of Nea Kameni, which emerged at the center of the Santorini caldera following eruptions over the last two thousand years, the most recent in 1950. Two hikers walk on a dusty path surrounded by black and brown lava rocks, in a landscape reminiscent of the lunar surface. The ground is scattered with solidified lava blocks of irregular shapes and hues ranging from black to rust red. In the distance, beyond the blue waters of the caldera, the white profile of Santorini villages perched on the cliffs can be glimpsed. The intense blue sky contrasts with the dark tones of the volcanic terrain. This excursion allows visitors to approach the still-smoking craters and understand the volcanic origin of the archipelago.
